Launching Only Local
Because protecting your privacy and your ideas is no laughing matter.
What if useful AI didn't always have to leave your computer?
We're exploring what happens when we start with local AI — running on the laptop you already own — and ask a very different question:
What if you got to decide where your AI works?
Not every task needs a frontier model.
Not every document needs to go to the cloud.
And not every problem needs AI at all.
LOL is a Capital Region experiment in figuring out which is which.
Tell us about a problem01 — What's at stake
Your business has something worth protecting.
For years, we've been told to put information into increasingly powerful systems because they're useful.
They are.
But usefulness shouldn't require surrendering control.
LOL starts with a simple principle:
If a task can be handled locally, why automatically send it somewhere else?
02 — The position
We're not anti-cloud. We're pro-placement.
Frontier AI is extraordinary. We'll use it — for research, for strategy, for complex reasoning, for designing solutions.
But a small local model may be all you need to:
- sort customer feedback
- summarize meeting notes
- classify documents
- search internal information
- organize repetitive work
- transform information into a standard format
- run a narrowly defined business task
The goal isn't to use the smallest model because smaller is better.
The goal is to use the right amount of intelligence for the job.
03 — How it works
One laptop. One problem. One experiment.
That's where LOL begins. You tell us about a repetitive task that's eating your time. We look at the information involved. Then we ask:
Could a small model handle it on your computer?
Does the task actually require frontier intelligence?
Should some information stay local while the cloud handles the heavy reasoning?
Maybe this is something a person should continue to own.
There is no prize for automating the wrong thing.
04 — The ask
We're looking for experiments.
LOL isn't a finished product. It's a laboratory. We're looking for Capital Region businesses and nonprofits willing to explore one small, real-world use case.
- No massive technology overhaul
- No six-month implementation
- No "AI transformation"
Just:
Find one annoying problem.
See what a laptop can do.
Learn something.
And if it doesn't work? That's useful too.
Because knowing where AI doesn't belong is part of AI literacy.
05 — The bigger question
AI is becoming incredibly powerful. But power and control aren't the same thing.
We believe people should understand:
- What information are we giving AI?
- Where is it being processed?
- Does it need to leave our organization?
- Who controls the system?
- What happens when it gets something wrong?
- And what could we do ourselves?
LOL is about making those questions ordinary.
Not scary.
Not technical.
Not reserved for corporations with IT departments.
Just practical.
Let's begin
Let's see what your laptop can do.
We're starting small on purpose. Because maybe the future of AI isn't just bigger models in bigger data centers.
Maybe part of it is useful intelligence sitting quietly on the machines of the people who actually own the work.
